Last chance to enter Academi Hywel Teifi Young Writers Competition

With just a few days to go before the competition closes, Swansea University is encouraging budding Welsh poets and authors to submit a poem, short story or an essay using the title "Efallai ...." ( maybe)

The Academi Hywel Teifi Young Writer will be announced at Eisteddfod yr Hendy - one of the oldest and largest local eisteddfodau in south west Wales - on Saturday 14th May 2011.  The winner will receive the Academi Hywel Teifi Trophy and a £75 prize.

Tudur Hallam, Professor of Welsh at Swansea University’s Academi Hywel Teifi and winner of the Chair at last year’s National Eisteddfod, said: “Judging the entries, and selecting the Academi Hywel Teifi Young Writer, is going to be a tough but truly rewarding challenge.”

Dr Gwenno Ffrancon and Dr Tudur Hallam

Dr Gwenno Ffrancon, Director of Swansea University’s Academi Hywel Teifi, added: "The late Professor Hywel Teifi Edwards was passionate about promoting and supporting the creative talents of young people. It is fitting that Academi Hywel Teifi should continue in the spirit of that important work.

“It will be an honour to present the promising young writer with the Academi Hywel Teifi Trophy at Eisteddfod yr Hendy."

To enter, send your poem, short story or essay to local organiser, Elsie Nicholas, at 71 Fforest Road, Pontarddulais, SA4 0TW. To be eligible, entrants must be aged 25 or under. Entries must arrive no later than Friday 6th May 2011.

    Note:

Eisteddfod yr Hendy will be held at Hendy Primary School, Carmarthenshire, on Saturday 14th May 2011. For more information, please contact Delyth Nicholas on 01792 884036.

Swansea University’s Academi Hywel Teifi was established in 2010. The Academi is a tribute to Professor Hywel Teifi Edwards who spent his academic career at Swansea University and is widely recognised for his unique contribution as a teacher, scholar, broadcaster and politician as well as defender and promoter of the Welsh language, especially in support of Welsh learners.
