    Julie James recognised by Swansea University

    Julie James MBA was presented with a commemorative print of Swansea University’s iconic Abbey Building at a reception held [Monday 11 July 2011] in recognition of the significant contribution that she has made as a valued member of the University’s governing body, Council.


    Julie James MBA was presented with a commemorative print of Swansea University’s iconic Abbey Building at a reception held [Monday 11 July 2011] in recognition of the significant contribution that she has made as a valued member of the University’s governing body, Council.

    Following a number of secretarial appointments, Mrs James pursued a career in HR. From 1984 to 2000, she held the position of Director of Personnel Monarch Airlines Ltd and Monarch Aircraft Engineering Ltd.

    Sir Roger Jones  

    During the official presentation ceremony, Sir Roger Jones, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Swansea University’s Council, said:  “Swansea University’s Council values the role played by each Member of Council and is particularly appreciative, and thankful, to the lay members who voluntarily contribute their precious time for the benefit of the University.

    “I am pleased to be able to present this print to Julie as a sign of our genuine appreciation and thanks for giving up her time, over many years, to share her valuable knowledge, skills and experience.”

    During her period on the Council of Swansea University, Mrs James also served as a member of senior committees, including the Human Resources Committee which she Chaired for several years.

    Julie has been Governor of Ashcroft School, Bedford; Chair of a number of Committees for Bedfordshire Training and Enterprise Council; and a governor of the University of Luton. In addition, she was a Recognition Panel Member for Investors in People; a Member of the Government Office Eastern region’s Fairplay Steering Group; and a Member of the South West Wales Board of the Prince's Trust.

    Currently, Julie hols a number of Welsh Government public appointments. She is a Non-Executive Director of Estyn, Chair of Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, Development Member of Hywel Dda Local Health Board and Assessor for the Corporate Health at Work Standard. She is also active in the voluntary sector and is Deputy Chairman of Keep Wales Tidy and a member of the Marie Curie Cancer Advisory Board for Wales.

    Accepting the keepsake, Mrs Julie James, said: “It has been a pleasure to play a part in the development of the University’s strategy to attract and retain internationally recognised research staff with the passion and enthusiasm to continuously deliver the high quality teaching and learning that helps students gain the skills demanded by employers in the key growth and strategically important sectors.

    “I’m confident that the University will achieve its mission to become a powerhouse for economic growth in south west Wales and to take full advantage of the proposed Bay Science and Innovation campus to drive forward the further development of a thriving knowledge economy locally and further afield.”

    The print was presented by Sir Roger Jones OBE in recognition of the significant role that members of Swansea University’s Council play in both protecting and promoting the interests of the institution.
