Mr Julian Smith MA was presented with a commemorative print of Swansea University’s iconic Abbey Building at a reception held [Monday 11 July 2011] in recognition of the significant contribution that he has made as a valued member of the University’s governing body, Council.

A Cambridge engineering graduate, Julian worked for several chemical companies on both sides of the Atlantic before returning to the UK in 1991.  After 16 years abroad, he started-up and managed the Swansea plant for Viskase (now BEMIS) - the inventor of cellulosic casings used in today's complex global processed meat trade. He subsequently set up a new factory for an Italian company in Merthyr. He is now retired and a Trustee of a couple of charities.

During the official presentation ceremony, Sir Roger Jones, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Swansea University’s Council, said: “Swansea University’s Council values the role played by each Member of Council and is particularly appreciative, and thankful, to the lay members who voluntarily contribute their precious time for the benefit of the University.

“We are truly grateful to Julian who has generously given-up his time and shared his valuable knowledge, skills and experience with members of Council over many years.”

Prior to taking up the role of lay member of Swansea University’s Council, Julian was Vice-President of the West Wales Chamber of Commerce;  Chair of Neath-Port Talbot Objective 1 Local Partnership; Vice-Chair of the West Wales board of Youth Enterprise; and a member of the Swansea CCET. During his period on the University’s Council, Mr Smith also served as Chair of the University’s Audit Committee.

Accepting the keepsake, Mr Julian Smith, said: “This print will take pride of place in my home office and remind me, on a daily basis, of the many fond memories I have of working with Swansea University as a valued member of the governing body, Council.“Employability is a key issue for graduates and I am confident that the fee plans recently submitted to the funding council for Wales will ensure that the students of today and tomorrow will continue to gain the valuable skills demanded by employers in the global 21st century market.”

The print was presented by Sir Roger Jones OBE in recognition of the significant role that members of Swansea University’s Council play in both protecting and promoting the interests of the institution.
