The Right Reverend Anthony Pierce has a long established connection with Swansea and the University. He was educated at Dynevor County Secondary School in Swansea and graduated in History from the University College Swansea in 1963. He was ordained in 1965 after a period of study at the Theology Linacre College Oxford.
During the official presentation ceremony, Sir Roger Jones, Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Swansea University’s Council, said: “Swansea University’s Council values the role played by each Member of Council and is particularly appreciative, and thankful, to the lay members who voluntarily contribute their precious time for the benefit of the University.“I am pleased to be able to present this print to Anthony as a sign of our genuine appreciation and thanks. He has generously given-up his time, over many years, to share his valuable knowledge, skills and experience.”
Before being elected Bishop of Swansea and Brecon in 1999, The Right Reverend Anthony Pierce held a number of curacies in Swansea and was Vicar of Llwynderw (1974-92); Vicar of St Barnabas, Uplands (1992-96) and Vicar of St Mary’s, Swansea (1996-99). He was made Archdeacon of Gower in 1995.
During his period on the University’s Council, the Right Reverend Anthony Pierce also served on a number of committees and on appointment panels for senior staff.
Accepting the keepsake, The Right Reverend Anthony Pierce, said: “Similar to other Universities, Swansea University places diversity and inclusivity at the core of its values. As such, the institution remains at the heart of the community and its’ ongoing respect for religious freedom attracts students and staff from across the world; creating a tolerant and integrated society where staff, students and their neighbours gain a deeper understanding and acceptance of people of different faiths.
“I am proud to have played a key role in achieving such a rich and diverse culture and I am sure that, on retirement, I will remember this achievement over the coming months and years when I glance at this picture hanging on the wall of my study.”
