Swansea Nursing graduate organises Palliative Care conference
An MSc Nursing graduate from Swansea University's School of Health Science has organised a conference on Challenges in Palliative Care, which will be held in the Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea on May 14.
Claire Job, who graduated from the School in 2006 with a distinction, is a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist and Hospital Palliative Care Team Leader at Swansea NHS Trust.
Claire is heading up the conference organisation team and she hasn’t wasted any time in ensuring that strong links continue between academia and practitioners by getting the School’s expert staff involved in the conference.
Dr Deborah Fitzsimmons, a Senior Lecturer at the School and Associate Dean of the Postgraduate Research Faculty will be speaking at the event.
Dr Fitzsimmons said: “Claire was a superb student during her time at the School and I am delighted to be working with her and her colleagues in developing research in palliative care here at Swansea.
“The conference is an excellent opportunity to publicise recent developments in palliative care and to bring together health care professionals interested in this area.”
The conference, which is a joint collaboration between Ty Olwen Specialist Palliative Care Service and Swansea NHS Trust, aims to fuel discussions on how care can be developed and to further educate those with an interest in this area of health care.
The keynote speaker is Professor Sheila Payne, an internationally renowned researcher in the field and Help the Hospices Chair at Lancaster University.
Other speakers include Dr Susan Closs, Lead Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Swansea NHS Trust, Dr Idris Baker, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at Swansea NHS Trust, Dr Simon Noble, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Palliative Medicine at Cardiff University, Reverend Nigel Griffin, Swansea NHS Trust Chaplain Manager, and Mrs Helen Davies, Nursing Team Manager for Marie Curie Nursing Service.
The conference, which takes place from 9am-5pm, costs £75 per person, or £55 if you work for Swansea NHS Trust, and includes lunch and refreshments.
