Scholarship to study The National Assembly for Wales’ Communication Strategies
Swansea University’s Department of Media and Communication Studies is offering a new Welsh-medium PhD scholarship in 2008-9.
The Department of Media and Communication Studies is one of the newest departments in Swansea University, yet also one of the most contemporary and progressive.
It is a dynamic and lively department, which offers the best possible introduction to the media, through both Welsh and English.
A full-time, fully funded scholarship is being offered to one successful candidate, to enable him/her to study for a doctorate on the National Assembly for Wales’ communication systems and strategies.
Under the supervision of two members of staff from the Department of Media and Communication Studies, the holder of the scholarship will consider the way in which the National Assembly for Wales (not the Government of Wales) communicates internally and also externally with the general public.
The successful candidate will be required to consider technological advances regarding communication systems within a political context.
In addition, this will be a comparative study, placing the National Assembly for Wales on a wider stage, by studying and comparing systems of communication used by Houses of Parliament world-wide.
The holder of this scholarship will have full access to the Assembly’s current communication strategies, to the various committees which operate within the Assembly, including proceedings in the principal chamber, and also to key individuals.
In order to facilitate the work, the holder of the scholarship will have his/her own work station in the Senedd and will benefit from the support of both the Assembly’s External Communications Team and the President’s Office.
This is an innovative project and the President of the Assembly, Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas AM, said: “The Assembly is totally committed to ensuring that we communicate robustly and efficiently, in order to engender understanding of the democratic process, and to engage the citizens of Wales in that process. We are extremely pleased to be collaborating with Swansea University’s Department of Media and Communication Studies, to offer this unique scholarship.”
Professor Kevin Williams of Swansea University said: “This is a marvellous opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to develop research skills in a contemporary and pioneering field, whilst also being part of an institution which is committed to research excellence and also Welsh-medium education.”
This scholarship is funded by the Centre for Welsh-medium University Education, in collaboration with Swansea University.
Further details about the scholarship can be found on the Department of Media and Communication Studies’ website and Swansea University’s website.
