Gold, silver and five-star awards for University Campus Catering

Three separate awards schemes have recognised the commitment of Swansea University’s Campus Catering service to serving up healthy food that meets the highest standards in food hygiene.

Angles Food Mall, the University’s main restaurant area, has received a Gold Award in the Healthy Options scheme run by the Environment Agency in partnership with local government.

All businesses that hold a valid food hygiene award may be considered for a Healthy Options award, which is assessed on the provision of health food choices.

The assessment looks at the range of healthy eating options available to customers and also covers steps taken to reduce salt and sugar content, as well as how healthy alternatives are priced and displayed.

Swansea University Campus Catering manager, Les Carmichael, said: “To win any award in the Healthy Options scheme is an achievement in itself, and it is fantastic that we have picked up Gold.

“We recognise the importance of offering a balanced range of healthy foods to our customers, and this award shows we do well in providing healthy alternatives.”

Campus Catering’s main kitchen, Impressions Café and Café West have also picked up awards.

All achieved Silver Awards in the Welsh Food Hygiene Award Scheme, and a maximum rating of five stars in the City and County of Swansea’s “Scores on the doors” scheme.

“Scores on the doors” provides food-related businesses with a certificate and star rating that allows customers to view their latest hygiene rating.

Scores are given for hygiene, structure and confidence in management, amongst other factors, and the aim of the scheme is to raise consumer confidence in the quality and safety of the food on sale.

The five-star rating achieved by Campus Catering demonstrates a very high standard of food safety management that is fully compliant with current food safety legislation.

“All in all, this is great news for Campus Catering,” added Mr Carmichael.

“Our catering teams are committed to ensuring the highest hygiene standards and I am delighted that their hard work and dedication has been recognised with these awards.”
