Students' Varsity match raises £7,000 for Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust
The Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust has received a £7,000 boost thanks to this year's Swansea and Cardiff Universities Varsity Rugby Match.

The Universities' Athletic Union Presidents, Simon Griffin (Swansea) and James Woodruff (Cardiff) presented a cheque to the Trust's Chairman, Sir Tasker Watkins VC GBE, at the Cardiff and County Club, Westgate Street, Cardiff.
All proceeds from the Varsity Rugby Match, which was held on April 25 at the Cardiff Arms Park, go towards providing support to severely injured rugby players and their families living in Wales. The funds were raised through a combination of ticket sales and individual contributions.
The annual competition, which is a major event in the University sporting calendar, originally began as part of the Oxfam Varsity series. The Welsh Varsity Challenge Rugby Match is the second largest of the British Varsity Games, behind Cambridge vs Oxford, and the Rugby Match regularly attracts a 5,000-strong crowd of supporters.
This year, Swansea University RFC lifted the coveted Victory Cup after triumphing over rivals Cardiff with an impressive score of 0-18.
Swansea University Athletic Union President, Simon Griffin, said: "We are delighted that this year's Varsity Rugby Match has again raised such a significant amount of money to support the Trust's work with injured rugby players and their families.
"While there may be rivalries on the rugby field, both teams and their supporters are united in their efforts to raise funds for this very worthwhile sporting charity."
Cardiff University Athletic Union President, James Woodruff, said: "I’m extremely proud that we could help the Welsh Charitable Trust. Varsity 2007 was a fantastic event and Varsity will go from strength to strength. It was a privilege to be involved in organising the event."
Sir Tasker Watkins, who was President of the Welsh Rugby Union from 1993-2004, added: "The Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust is very grateful for the generous contribution from the Athletic Unions of Swansea and Cardiff Universities. The donation will be applied in its entirety to helping severely injured rugby players in Wales."
