“Which Candidate Wales” – website allows Welsh voters to compare election candidates’ views with their own

A Wales-specific election website, allowing voters to compare their political opinions with those of the candidates in 40 constituencies across Wales, has been launched by a team of Swansea University political experts, including students.

“Which Candidate Wales” aims to increase Welsh voters’ engagement with political issues and awareness of candidates’ stances before the General Election on June 8th.

The project is a collaboration between Swansea University and the University of Limerick, and is funded by the Swansea University’s Research Grant Enabler (SURGE).

"Which Candidate Wales" is politically independent, and gives politically neutral information on where Welsh candidates stand on the issues.

The website team have devised a series of 40 questions on key issues at stake in the election such as the economy, Brexit and immigration.

They have invited all candidates to create an individual profile that record their positions on these questions – thus the candidates control the content of their profiles.  Where candidates do not respond individually, they have coded their party’s stances based on systematic analysis of their manifestos and policy documents.

Voters can choose to answer all 40 questions or just pick the issues that matter to them.

The website then matches the individual’s positions on the questions that they answer with those of the local candidates, and allows them to explore issue-by-issue where they agree and disagree with each candidate.

The team believes that this enables voters to make more informed decisions at the ballot box.

The Which Candidate Wales project is led by Dr. Matthew Wall, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the Department of Politics and International Relations at Swansea University, and involves a team of Swansea University students (see photo below).

Dr Matthew Wall, Wales Project Leader, said:

“Which Candidate Wales is a unique ‘vote advice’ website – it focuses on Wales only, unlike many similar websites that can ignore or underplay Welsh issues. It also puts the onus on individual candidates to create their own profiles – we have invited every candidate in Wales who has a publicly available email address to take part”.

www.whichcandidate.co.uk encourages political engagement and awareness on a local basis here in Wales, by allowing voters to look at what their local candidates have to say, rather than simply focusing on the party leaders”.
