It’s the final count down. Only two more days to go to get as many pledges as we can and ensure that Swansea University wins the Santander Cycles University Challenge competition.
Although we’re at the top of the leaderboard and we’ve reached our original target, we still need more pledges in order to win the Santander Cycles University Challenge competition and unlock the £100k of capital funding required to launch the scheme. The two universities which have raised the most funding over their operating costs will be the winners and we are being chased.
The competition is hot on our trail and we still need pledges to maintain our position at the top of the leaderboard – pledge online at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/bikes4swansea.
We’ve set a new ‘stretch’ target – the more pledges, the bigger scheme and the potential for more stations and more bikes. Find out more at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/bikes4swansea.
It's not just about winning the competition - if we reach the ‘stretch’ target we will have enough money to buy 5 extra bikes and 10 extra docking stations, which could be a small hub in a new location.
We’re so grateful to all the individuals who have supported the scheme and particularly the amazing support we’ve had from a large number of businesses.
Swansea City FC is one of the latest contributors to the crowdfunding scheme. They said: “Swansea City is pleased to support Swansea University in their goal of bringing a bike share hire scheme to Swansea. The benefits of this plan are tremendous -- reducing traffic, helping the environment and encouraging exercise. It is great to see the University continuing to be at the forefront of making the city a better place to live, work, learn and play.”
The City & County of Swansea Council is fully supporting Swansea University in its crowdfunding campaign with Santander to bring a bike hire scheme to the city. The scheme will give the public an opportunity to hire bikes from strategically placed bike stations.
Andrea Lewis, Cabinet Member for Housing, Energy and Building Services, said: “The council is fully supportive of this venture and we would urge others to get behind it and support the university in its efforts to bring this sustainable transport scheme to the city.”
