The Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES) provides an invaluable opportunity to taught master students to express their views with regard to their taught master experience on an annual basis.
The result of this year's PTES was extremely favourable for LLM programmes delivered by the Department of Shipping and Trade Law at Swansea. In particular, a very high figure of 92% of our students said that they were “very satisfied” with the quality of our teaching provision (this is 8 % higher than the sector average). A number of things particularly stood out: “contact time” (the time we were happy to spend teaching, advising and generally talking to our students); “academic enhancement” (students' feeling that their course had left them well-qualified to take on the world and compete with the best in it); and challenge (the fact that we engaged with our students and encouraged them to probe and question everything they heard, including from us). It is also worth noting that 90 % of our students indicated that the LLM course had helped them to enhance their research ability – the average figure for the UK as a whole being a noticeably lower 70%.
The overall satisfaction rating for the LLM degrees offered by the Department was 96%, a figure that we think few if any commercial LLM courses in Britain, or even the US, can match. In fact, this is a figure which is 12 % higher than the UK sector average.
Commenting on the results, Professor B Soyer, Head of the Department of Shipping and Trade Law, said: "We offer contemporary and practical taught master degrees to our students. Our teaching is informed by the research that we undertake. We have very good links with legal practice, insurance and oil and gas sectors, and during their studies do our best to equip our students with transferable skills that will give them a competitive edge in the job market. The most recent PTES scores is a clear evidence that we had got it right, big time. I am lucky to lead a very talented group of academics who are devoted to offer the best experience possible to the students. We are aiming to enhance student experience even further and various new initiatives are being put in place during the summer which will hopefully benefit the new LLM cohort arriving in September 2016."
