The Department of Shipping and Trade Law has always been committed to providing LLM students with a well-rounded education, which extends beyond traditional teaching to include a wide range of extra-curricular activities giving our students an insight into the shipping industry and commercial legal practice.
To that end, another delegation of LLM teaching staff and students recently visited a number of leading enterprises and institutions within the City of London with a view to enhancing their practical understanding of shipping and insurance practice.
The LLM students were first welcomed by the Standard P&I Club, one of the top mutual insurance associations. The students had the opportunity to meet key members of the Club and attend a full introduction to this vital sector of the shipping industry. The presentation was followed by a reception during which the students had the chance to speak directly with members of the firm, including of Swansea LLM alumni, gaining further insights into future career opportunities.
Then the delegation moved to the Supreme Court, where students attended a guided tour of the Court and also had the chance to watch the hearings taking place on the day. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to observe how the judicial system operates and how justice is served at the highest court of the country.
Associate Professor Theodora Nikaki, one of the LLM Employability Co-ordinators, commented after the visit: “The Department of Shipping and Trade Law is extremely grateful to Nick Sansom of Standard P&I Club for welcoming our LLM students to the Club and introducing them to mutual insurance. This provided an invaluable educational experience to our students and no doubt triggered the interest of some in pursuing a career in a P&I Club”
