Innovative support group aids businesses in Wales
The European Union-funded IP Wales® is a £4m award-winning business support initiative operating out of the Institute of International Shipping & Trade Law.
In recognition of our success in raising levels of understanding of Intellectual Property (IP) in Wales, the Director of IP Wales Andrew Beale was invited to work for the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and achieved national recognition for services to intellectual property and business in Wales with the award of an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, 2009.

IP Wales aims to provide Welsh small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) with the knowledge and financial means to protect and commercialise their intellectual assets by helping them to integrate an intellectual assets strategy into their business plan. Since our launch in June 2002, we have provided strategic advice to over 750 clients, helped to capture and protect 205 patents, 60 trade marks and 12 industrial designs around the world and furnished financial support for 25 IP licensing deals.
Knowledge-based businesses need access to advanced technology and know-how, good management and finance to succeed. We have found that a better management team will make more commercial use of a poorer technology than a poorer management team will make of a better technology. Finance will seek out good management teams so our focus has become researching the law relating to intellectual assets management & transactions.
