International Conference on Regional or Minority Languages -20-21 November 2006

"The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages: Legal Challenges and Opportunities"

In November 2006, the School of Law, Swansea University hosted a highly successful 2 day International Conference on "The European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages: Legal Challenges and Opportunities". The Conference, which took place in Swansea , was fully sponsored and supported by the Council of Europe and the Welsh Language Board.

The Conference attracted distinguished speakers from all over the world, and 25 academic papers were presented. The opening address was given by Professor Iwan Davies (School of Law , Swansea University ), Mr Alexey Kozhemyakov (Council of Europe) and Mr Meirion Prys Jones (Welsh Language Board). Keynote speakers were Professor Fernand de Varennes (School of Law , Murdoch University, Australia), Mr Jean-Marie Woehrling (Hon President of the Administrative Tribunal and President of the Institute for Local Legislation of Alsace-Moselle) and Mr Robert Dunbar (Reader in Law and Celtic, University of Aberdeen).

The Conference was a ground-breaking event as it was the first time a British university had organised a conference, in collaboration with the Council of Europe, specifically dedicated to the subject of the Charter. A contract has been awarded by Council of Europe Publishing to Gwyn Parry (School of Law , Swansea University) and Robert Dunbar ( University of Aberdeen ) to co-edit a volume of essays based on the papers presented at the conference.
