Annual Conference (20 April 2007)
The second Annual Conference of the South Wales Local Family Justice Council in association with Swansea Family Court Inter Disciplinary Forum was held at the Liberty Stadium in Swansea on Friday 20 April 2007. Led by a highly qualified panel of expert speakers, this one day Conference explored current and developing systemic responses to domestic violence and their implications for inter-disciplinary practice within the family justice system. The conference was attended by over 200 delegates.
Like all of the Forum events, the Conference was CPD accredited. It was designed for professionals having an interest in domestic violence and the family justice system (lawyers, the police, health professionals, CAFCASS officers, social workers, voluntary agencies and women’s refuges, magistrates and judges). The Forum was established in 2000 by the School of Law in conjunction with local family judiciary and provides a link between public child and family law research interests at the School of Law and cross-disciplinary professional practice.
The Conference was chaired by Professor Mary Hayes (Visiting Professor, School of Law, Swansea University) in the morning and by HHJ Isobel Parry (Swansea Civil Justice Centre) in the afternoon. Speakers included Khatun Sapnara (Coram Chambers), Professor Judith Masson (Bristol University), Jan Pickles OBE (Cardiff Women’s Safety Unit), Jin Hehir (Clerk, Neath Port Talbot Justices), Jasvinder Sanghera (founder of Karma Nirvana and author of Shame, an account of ‘honour-based’ family violence drawing on her own life experiences), Dr Lorraine Radford (Head of Research, NSPCC) and Jonathan Furness Q.C.
