4th International Research Seminar in Maritime, Port and Transport Law

The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL) continues to expand its international links apace.

Ceren In collaboration with the Universities of Bologna, Barcelona (Universitat Autònoma), Málaga and Marmara, it co-organised the 4th International Research Seminar in Maritime, Port and Transport Law held in Bologna on 29 June- 3 July 2015. The event provided an invaluable forum for doctoral students from all across Europe to present their research and discuss it formally and informally with distinguished academics in the field. Sessions were chaired, and debates led, by leading academics from various universities across Europe, including such well-known names as Prof. Stefano Zunarelli, Prof. Dr. Fabio Croccolo and Prof. Dr. Ignacio Arroyo Martinez.

Two members of the IISTL played a particularly active role. Professor Rhidian Thomas delivered a masterclass on “Commercial Custom, Usage and Practice” as well as moderating most of the sessions and in addition generously providing feedback and advice a large number of  PhD students. Ms Ceren Cerit, a second-year PhD student and research assistant at the IISTL, presented a paper “The Impact of Qualifications on the Performance Warranties in Time Charterparties”, which received  glowing feedback from various academics and inspired a good many questions from the audience. It is worth remembering that over the years, those with PhDs from the IISTL have established themselves in increasing numbers in academia across the globe. Ms Cerit’s PhD is fully sponsored by Ministry of National Education (Turkey) and upon completion of her degree she will start her academic career as an Assistant Professor at Yildirim Beyazit University in Ankara.
