The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL)joined forces with the Air Law Group of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) to organise a seminar on risk allocation in aviation contracts.
The event was held on 26 September at the premises of the Royal Aeronautical Society in London and was devoted to risk allocation in contracts for the supply and service of aircraft and related issues such as indemnity clauses. It was pleasing to see that the event was embraced by the London aviation community attracting 70 delegates from a wide range of law firms, insurers and other aviation providers. As expected, it ignited the debate on a topic of increasing academic and practical importance.
Apart from academics from the IISTL, namely Professor Andrew Tettenborn, who chaired a session, and Dr George Leloudas, who delivered a paper on risk allocation in transport law, the following aviation professionals presented papers at the event:
Dr Donal Hanley (Aviation Capital Group); Professor B. Patrick Honnebier (University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and Gomez & Bikker Law Offices); Simon Phippard (Bird & Bird);Carol Anderson (MRAeS); Anna Anatolitou (Ince & Co LLP); Dr Laurent Chassot (GBF Attorneys at Law, Geneva), Christopher Smith (Holman Fenwick Willan LLP), Marko Ninkovic (Brit Global Specialty) and Tim Marland (Quadrant Chambers).

Speaking after the event, Dr George Leloudas, who led the event from IISTL’s perspective, commented:
“The fact that the event attracted so many delegates is a clear sign of its success. We plan to build upon this success and make it a permanent fixture echoing the feedback of the delegates and the desire of the British aviation community for high-quality legal seminars. We certainly have the talent and the desire to serve the aviation sector in a variety of ways. I would like to thank the Air Law Group of the Society for hosting this seminar and in particular I am grateful to Rob Lawson QC and Tim Marland of Quadrant Chambers as well as to Carol Anderson for assisting in identifying the speakers and setting the sessions. Also, I would like to thank all those who made this event a success: delegates, speakers and chairpersons, and also my colleagues at the IISTL who provided their generous support. Last but not least, I would like to thank Informa from Routledge for agreeing to publish the papers presented in book format in 2017.”
