The Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law (IISTL) introduced a Prize in 2009 with the intention of encouraging Swansea LLM (Maritime/Commercial/Trade and Oil and Gas) students to produce a research output of highest quality in Part 2 of their LLM studies.
The winner of the Prize in 2017 was Karin Garfjeld Roberts who completed her LLM in International Maritime Law in 2016 at Swansea University with distinction. Prior to coming to Swansea, Karin studied at Nottingham University and worked at General Reinsurance,(London) as casualty facultative underwriter for a number of years. During her studies at Swansea, Karin also spent a month at Holman Fenwick Willan (London) as an intern. Karin is currently working at Willis Tower Watson as a Reinsurance broker.
The Prize was presented to Karin during the graduation reception by Professor B. Soyer, the Director of the IISTL. Commenting after receiving the award Karin said: “I loved every minute of my year in Swansea – there was a great group of students from all around the world so it was very much work hard, play hard. The LLM experience was very rewarding and enjoyable. The College organised a number of trips ranging from visiting law firms, insurance companies and even a trip to Lloyd’s of London. In addition to this every Wednesday we had guest lectures from people in the maritime industry and these both complimented our studies and gave us an insight into the wide range of career opportunities available on completion of the course.
"I recommend the course to everyone contemplating a future in shipping and trade sector. My only advice would be to make sure you bring a raincoat! (But don’t worry about the rain – the great thing about Swansea is that if you don’t like the weather, just wait ten minutes and it will change!)”
