What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing, is a way of using deep relaxation and self-hypnosis in labour and birth. It helps you to relax and cope with the physical effort of labour and birth, and can reduce the effects of tension, fear and pain on the way the body works in labour. It helps you and your partner to create the right kind of environment for your birth so that you can produce natural endorphins and can enable your body to work as it is designed to, to birth your baby.

We use a process of breathing and relaxation, and the use of ‘scripts’ which are simply positive stories that you can use to focus on relaxing and achieving that state of calm and confidence in your birth.  We help you develop techniques which you can use to manage your stress during pregnancy and help you to prepare to have your baby.

There is some research to show that improving relaxation with techniques such as this can contribute to your health and that of your baby by reducing stress and anxiety. Hypnobirthing helps you to feel in control of your birth experience and to feel more confident about labour and birth.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the hypnobirthing classes entail?

You spend 2 days (either over a weekend or 4 mornings over 2 weeks) with a trained Hypnobirthing midwife, learning about labour and birth. You will have time to discuss issues and expectations and will learn the relaxation and self-hypnosis techniques with your partner, who will be able to support you through every stage of your birth journey. You will be given a book which explains the principles of Hypnobirthing and a CD of some relaxation scripts to help guide and prepare you for your birth.

Classes will include regular breaks.

We will begin with introductions and there will be an opportunity to inform the class leader (in confidence) if you have any health or other issues that may affect your experience of the class.

We will do different activities throughout the day which will build your confidence and ease using deep relaxation.

At the end of the programme of classes you will have access to your hypnobirthing midwife via telephone, for follow up consultation if you have any questions or queries about using the techniques and preparing for labour and birth.

Will food and drink be provided?

You will have access to the tea and coffee machine in the Health and Wellbeing academy, and if you are attending full day classes, you will be able to use the catering facilities on campus. Alternatively you can bring your own lunch and use the café seating in the reception area, or take a walk around the grounds.

Do I need to bring anything?

Please bring with you a pillow, a blanket or similar, and some water to drink during the day.

Who leads the classes?

The classes are led by Alys Einion, who is a midwife and also teaches midwifery at the University. She may be supported by a student midwife who has some training in the use of hypnosis in labour and birth.

Will I lose control during hypnosis?

Absolutely not. We use relaxation and mind-body techniques but you will be fully aware and conscious and in control of yourself at all times.

Can I use hypnobirthing if I am having my baby in hospital?

Yes. Hypnobirthing can be used for a hospital birth. You simply need to inform your midwife and she will let the rest of the staff know that you are using it and not to disturb you.

Can I use hypnosis if I am having an induction of labour or a caesarean?

Yes. You can use this approach regardless of the type of birth you have. The only time you cannot use it is if you are having a general anaesthetic, because you will not be conscious.

I am a single mother, can I bring someone other than a ‘partner’ to be my birth companion?

Anyone can be your birth companion – a family member, a friend, even a Doula. But this person should attend the entire hypnobirthing course with you so that they can fully support you. If you do not have anyone, you can still use hypnobirthing alone.

How much does it cost?

£250 percouple for a 2 day session.
