The Centre for the Study of Culture and Politics

The Centre for the Study of Culture and Politics (C-SCAP) is dedicated to the promotion of political research.

The Centre for the Study of Culture and Politics (C-SCAP) is dedicated to the promotion of political research that starts from the recognition that government and politics involves much more than the series of institutions engaged in the production of legislation or the conduct of foreign or international relations.

A political ‘regime’ is made up of a range of social institutions and practices that both express and create a ‘way of life’, a people and their character. Studying these involves a combination of conceptual development and the historical analysis of ideas, values and experiences as they have been expressed, presented and re-presented over time.

The Centre is hosting and promoting research that combines the disciplinary strengths of philosophy, intellectual and cultural history, sociology, media and communication studies with the traditions of political studies. Taking a broad view it focuses in particular on understanding the contemporary ‘politicisation’ of cultures and theorising ‘cultural’ of politics.

C-SCAP hosts research in this field and organises conferences and symposia to create opportunities for its development.  We are currently seeking to expand its range of postgraduate research students and enquiries from potential students are welcome.
