The Centre for Egyptian and Mediterranean Archaeology
(weblink to CEMA homepage)
The Centre for Egyptian and Mediterranean Archaeology undertakes research on ancient Egypt and the archaeology of the Mediterranean in classical antiquity. Swansea has had historic links with the study of Egyptology from the nineteenth century through Sir Gardner Wilkinson. The disciplines of Egyptology and Classics have been linked in the university since the 1960s, and the research centre will further develop these associations to explore the interplay between Egypt and the classical world.
The Centre embraces the research staff of the Department of Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology as well as curators in the University’s Egypt Centre, its collection of Egyptian antiquities. Staff of CEMA are involved with excavation and post-excavation projects in Egypt, Greece, Italy, Libya, Syria, and Turkey.
