Priya Tucker, BSc Health and Social Care

What did you do prior to studying at Swansea University?
I studied my A-levels at Stoodley Knowle School. I took part in work experience over the summer at Rowcroft Hospice as this was related to a health occupation and undertook a First Aid course specific to infants and babies; this was the nursing age group which I wanted to study at University.

How did you feel when you entered the clearing process?
Very nervous and alone. I felt like it was a ‘shot in the dark’ when ringing universities. I did not have much guidance as I obviously hadn’t experienced the clearing process before. It made me feel like giving up and having a gap year instead.

Why did you choose Swansea University after going through the clearing process?
I had already applied to Swansea for Nursing which was rejected. The university had made such a good impression on me and I loved the area and how it was opposite the beach. Once I discovered this Health and Social Care course and realised it could be a different way into nursing I applied straight away.

What would you say to other students going through the same thing?
I would recommend during the summer before exams to write a list of ‘options’ of other universities and their courses which you would consider if they enter clearing, this way on the day instead of panicking and possibly giving up you will have a structured list which will save time when ringing and securing a place on a different course.

What’s been your highlight whilst studying at Swansea University?
The atmosphere in the student village has definitely been a highlight. Everyone is so laid back and friendly. Freshers week was well structured and organised, the events they held were excellent for making me find my feet in Swansea and lose my anxiety about being away from home.

What’s been your favourite part of the course so far?
My favourite part of the course has definitely been the practical lab sessions. I want a career in a hospital based or medical setting testing blood types or analysing urine samples so this was very pleasing for me.  I have also enjoyed studying Psychology as this is not something I have come across before so I was very intrigued by the new concepts I was learning.

What are your plans/hopes for the future?
I hope to become a nurse or another occupation which takes place in a hospital setting. Overall I would like a health profession which involves interaction with people.

Would you recommend Swansea University to other students?
I would recommend Swansea University due to the fact it is a campus university, this means it is easy to reach different buildings which your lectures may be in and it is easy to reach the library in-between lectures. The university is also opposite the beach which is a great way to bond with course mates if you venture down to the beach after lectures.
