Kayleigh Faram, BSc Mental Health Nursing

What did you do prior to studying at Swansea University?
Before coming to Swansea University, I studied a BTEC Health and Social Care course in Neath Port Talbot College and applied for 5 different universities, including Swansea. I thought my interview in Swansea for the nursing degree went well, however I had just missed out of a place, so I began to decide on another university. However, after realising I would not be able to afford moving away to study nursing, I decided to give it another shot and apply through clearing.

How did you feel when you entered the clearing process?
When entering the clearing process, I felt very nervous because it was quite a rush, and as each day went by the deadline for applications came closer, along with the start date for the nursing degree. However, on results day I had an email off one of the lecturers on the nursing degree telling me that there was a place for me on the course if i wanted it, and of course i did! I was supported all the way by one of the lecturers informing me of everything i needed to do before starting my degree, although it all came about so quickly!

Why did you choose Swansea University after going through the clearing process?
I chose Swansea University through clearing because it is close to my home so i could stay at home whilst studying which would save me a lot of money and also the university is lovely in itself! There are so many activities to get involved in, so you don't miss out on the fun, even if you are doing a full time course! Swansea University has a lovely atmosphere, and there is always something going on whether it be fresher fairs, varsity games, or summer balls- so there is always something you can get involved in and just enjoy yourself whilst at uni.

What would you say to other students going through the same thing?
To any other students worrying because they didn't get accepted into the university they wished for first time, it’s not the end. I thought I would have to take a year out and re-apply for the course I desired but that was not the case. Don't lose hope because sometimes, its not because you weren't good enough its just the luck of the draw. I didn't get accepted after my interview for Swansea University, however I didn't give up, I applied through clearing and am now preparing to go into my second year of the mental health nursing degree. There is always a plan B, Swansea Uni offers the chance to apply through clearing, so use it because it could mean getting onto the course you want and being one step closer to what you want to do in life!

What’s been your highlight whilst studying at Swansea University?
Enjoying the fresher fairs and freebies that come with them! Especially the discount cards for clubs on wind street!!

What’s been your favourite part of the course so far?
I've enjoyed the practical sessions, you learn so much by doing!

What are your plans/hopes for the future?
I hope to work with young people who suffer from mental illness in the future and make a change.

Would you recommend Swansea University to other students?
I would recommend Swansea University to anyone wanting to go onto further studies. It had a great atmosphere as well as a variety of things to get involved in. If your a party animal, there's freshers week and even a night club on campus. But for people who are daring and like trying new things, you can join a sport team, or even try something you've never done before like surfing or snowboarding!
