Laura Pearson, BSc Adult Nursing
What did you do prior to studying at Swansea University?
Following completion of a History degree at Liverpool University, I began work in pharmaceutical public relations in London. As much as I enjoyed this career choice, I decided to begin a career in Nursing, to work closer with patients and families.
Why did you choose to study at Swansea University?
Not only did Swansea University offer me the opportunity to re-locate home and enable me to utilise my Welsh language skills, I was also aware of their excellent reputation for nurse education.
Can you tell us about your course?
I studied nursing at Swansea University’s Carmarthen Campus. Its friendly and supportive community enabled me to thrive as a result of their appropriate guidance. The course consisted of practical and theoretical elements, assessed through a variety of relevant frameworks. Although the course was challenging at times, overall it was enjoyable and rewarding. This effective learning environment helped me to achieve a first class honours and subsequently, the Margaret Perry Award for Outstanding Scholarship.
What part of the course did you enjoy the most?
The most enjoyable part of the course was the variety of clinical placements I experienced. This formed a good grounding in the role and skills of a nurse, in preparation for registration, and consolidated my theoretical learnings.
What’s been your highlight whilst studying at Swansea University?
My highlight was completing a placement in the Emergency Unit, and realising a desire to begin my nursing career in this environment. Now working as a Staff Nurse in an Emergency Unit, I am thankful for that initial and valuable exposure.
What are your plans/hopes for the future?
Whilst I am still a newly-qualified nurse, and conscious that there many opportunities for career development in nursing, currently my interests would lead to a future in an Advanced Nurse Practitioner role.
Would you recommend Swansea University to other students?
I would highly recommend Swansea University due to its seafront location and active student life, in addition to excellent teaching resources. However, Swansea University has the advantage of two campuses for Nursing, and perhaps for the more mature student with other commitments, Carmarthen offers these resources in a more convenient location.
