Welcome to the Department of History and Classics at Swansea University. Our members of staff are internationally recognised scholars whose research covers a wide range of historical topics, periods and places. Collectively we are especially strong in the history of political thought, the history of welfare and conflict, maritime and imperial history, the history of gender and sexuality, religious history, the history of science and medicine, the history of travel and migration and labour history. Our coverage of European history and the history of the British Isles is especially extensive, but our expertise also encompasses aspects of the history of Asia and the Americas.

Research

Our Academic staff are actively involved in two research centres, the Callaghan Centre for the Study of Conflict, Power and Empire and the Richard Burton Research Centre. The Centres promote research through collaborative work, regular research, information reading groups, conferences and publications. The combination of teaching and research is at the heart of our work. Students at Swansea tackle a range of historical subjects and periods with teachers who are experts in those fields. Our students enjoy a warm and friendly atmosphere and all of our students have a personal adviser. We are dedicated to helping every individual student achieve to the best of their ability

Student Societies

Student members of the History Postgraduate and Undergraduate Societies organise research symposiums, student balls, memorial events and film shows. Students also have the opportunity to attend voluntary field trips to enhance their knowledge, experience and study skills.  The History Postgraduate Society was previously awarded an AHRC Collaborative Research Training Public Engagement grant. This gives them £2000 to organise an event for History postgraduates across Wales and beyond at which experts from the fields of public policy, the media and heritage will lead discussion on ways in which History PhD students can maximise the 'impact' of their research.

Careers

Our Graduates have entered careers which allow them to use their degree discipline such as education, global marketing and advertising, media, international and national recruitment, global business, law and finance, sport, heritage and tourism, defence and foreign affairs, government, diplomatic corps and humanitarian organisations.  Graduates go on to study Masters degrees, or PhDs which can lead to a career in Academia.
