Academic staff in Spanish-Hispanic Studies have a world-class reputation for the standard of their research and we are committed to deliver truly exciting teaching programmes which are intellectually stimulating and demanding. Our research interests are wide-ranging and cover the periods from the Middle Ages to the contemporary Hispanic world (including Catalan and Latin American literatures) and members of staff are actively involved in the Centre for the Comparative Study of the Americas (CECSAM). The Centre promote research through collaborative work, research seminars, informal reading groups, conferences, publications and also inform and enhance our teaching.

At Undergraduate level Spanish can be studied on its own as Single Honours degree or in combination with a wide range of other subjects in Arts and Humanities or with Geography, Economics, Psychology or Law. It is also possible to study Spanish as a Single Honours degree with another subject as a minor element, e.g. German with Business Studies, Computer Studies or Legal Studies.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

We welcome all enquiries and applications. Our preferred offer for Single and Joint Honours is BBB at A level. However, we look at each application and we will consider AS level qualifications. You should have a grade C or above in A level Spanish or a grade B or above in AS level for advanced entry.  If you are a beginner in Spanish we normally require an A level or AS level in another modern language. Candidates pursuing Scottish Highers, the Irish Leaving Certificate, Access courses, the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate or Welsh Baccalaureate qualifications, are also eligible. We welcome applications from candidates with non-traditional qualifications.  Swansea University has one of the best records in the UK for facilitating access to higher education for disabled students

We particularly welcome applicants from outside the United Kingdom. For candidates offering the International Baccalaureate, a typical offer would be 32 points. International candidates studying for American qualifications would have obtained their High School Diploma and in addition to this we normally look for a minimum of 550 in each part of the SAT reasoning and subject tests (or 1650 overall) and/or a minimum IELT score of 6.0.

VISIT DAYS AND OFFERS

We normally make offers according to the information contained in your UCAS form. We look at your predicted grades and in particular your personal statement. We do make flexible offers, as we treat your application individually and assess you on your merits. If our Admissions Tutor decides to make you an offer, we will then invite you to attend a Modern Language visit day where you will have the chance to meet staff and students who will answer any questions you may have about Spanish-Hispanic Studies, other European languages and what it is like studying and living at Swansea. Preference is given to candidates who have made Swansea their first-choice university by firmly accepting our offer.

HOW IT WORKS

Our degrees are built around "compulsory" and "optional" modules. If you have an A level or equivalent in Spanish, in the first year you will follow a compulsory language module which builds on your knowledge of spoken and written Spanish and a compulsory module in Hispanic culture. Beginners in Spanish follow intensive language modules in their first year in order to reach a standard equivalent to A level.  In the second year you continue to develop your language skills. You will spend your third year of study abroad, where you can work as an English-language assistant in Spain or Latin America through the British Council assistantship programme or you can study at one of our partner universities in Spain.  In your final year, you will write a specialised dissertation on one of your modules.

Our students have an academic adviser who is responsible for guiding them along an academic pathway which takes into account the requirements of the degree schemes and the individual's interests.
