The Director’s Office provides high-level administration across the department, ensuring professional and quality office procedures are in place. The office strategically ensures the financial requirements of the University are being professionally managed and communicated on behalf of the Director with adherence to key trigger points and milestones. It leads the HR processes and systems including performance enabling and operates alongside all professional services departments regarding the University’s core values.
Catherine Marks, Director of Global Advancement
Catherine Marks established the Department in 2002 and has overseen its growth and development to create a vibrant marketing culture across the University working in global, regional and local markets.
There is now a dedicated central team of some 100 plus professionally line managed staff working in the key areas of Admissions, Alumni, Business Marketing, Front of House, Fundraising and Development, Internationalisation, Marketing, PR & Communications, Recruitment, Sport and Corporate Events.
This central marketing effort is complemented by work in Colleges, Departments and on projects ensuring the impact of Swansea University in all communities.
Catherine graduated in Economics from Bangor University and undertook her Masters in International Marketing at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She has worked in the commercial company of the University of Edinburgh and in PR and Marketing with the Police, UWCN and the Audit Commission.
She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and founding member of the CIM HE Group. In her spare time Catherine volunteers as Crew for Ferryside Inshore Lifeboat.
Emma Frearson-Emmanuel, Associate Director (Recruitment, Admissions, IDO)
Emma’s role is primarily to provide direction across the University on student recruitment, admissions and internationalisation. Emma has held various international roles within the University which have given her a breadth and depth of experience in study and work abroad, international recruitment and marketing, and programme development. Her other roles include engagement with Arts and Change Management.
Elizabeth Shouaib, Head of Directorate Services and Special Projects
Liz is a founder member of Global Advancement and manages the Director’s Office which has significantly grown since the department was first set up in 2002. Her role includes leading the professional administration of all Directorate Office activity and to manage large, specific projects for the Director such as the Honorary Awards Programme and the University Centenary Campaign. Liz established and is developing the Front of House service provision across the University along with VIP relationship management and supporting corporate events.
She has many years’ administrative experience in both academic and professional services departments including the Registrar and Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s offices.
Vanessa Walters, Director's Office Manager
Vanessa joined Global Advancement in April 2015 as the Front of House Senior Administrator supporting the development of the front facing public areas at Fulton House, Singleton Abbey and The Great Hall Box Office.
Since joining the team, her role has grown significantly with the recent appointment of Director’s Office Manager. Her role includes managing the professional administration in the Directorate, being the key contact with Finance and HR Business Partners for managers and colleagues and line-managing staff in the Director’s office, Front of House and Directorate support systems.
Nicholas Owen, Front of House Officer
Nicholas joined Global Advancement in September 2015 supporting the development of the front facing public areas at Fulton House, Singleton Abbey and The Great Hall box office.
Nick leads and manages a team of 15 Front of House student ambassadors and the University Switchboard Operator to ensure they provide consistent excellent customer service. His role also includes managing the Customer Service Excellence Award for the Directorate, developments for the University, staff development and training, merchandise sales and liaising with staff and clients for events.
Samantha Rees, Personal Assistant to the Director of Global Advancement
Samantha provides an organisational and administration management service to the Director and Central Marketing office. Joining the department in 2008, she has many years’ experience working in Secretarial and Personal Assistant roles in both the health and education sectors.
Cathy James, Systems Administrator
Cathy works part-time in the Director’s office and is responsible for maintaining the absence management system within the department. She also manages all sickness records and produces information such as contact lists and organisational charts for the use of Global Advancement staff.
