Here are just some of the reasons why we think you should consider applying to Swansea to study Geography:

  • Our teaching is of the highest quality.  We won the Times Higher Education’s award for providing the UK's "Best Student Experience" in 2005, and we were shortlisted again in 2006. We consistently achieve a very high overall student satisfaction rating in the National Student Survey: it was 88% in 2010. Our teaching has been rated as Excellent by external assessors.

  • In the landmark 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of our research was judged to be of international quality, and 60% was regarded as world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*). As a very well-resourced research-led Department our students benefit enormously from excellent facilities and extremely talented, enthusiastic, and dedicated academic staff, who give courses that are cutting-edge, interesting, and challenging.

  •  We are a large and growing Department, which allows us to offer specialist courses across the entire breadth of the subject: human geography, physical geography, and geo-informatics.

  • Our course structure allows students maximum flexibility.  As well as offering a variety of degree schemes, we allow students a wide choice of modules in the optional parts of Levels Two and Three.

  • Single Honours students undertake an overseas field course in their second year in one of several exciting locations: VancouverNew York Mallorca or Austria.  Further opportunities for fieldwork arise throughout the course.

  • We assess students using a variety of methods, including an imaginative mix of traditional examinations, carefully structured and monitored coursework, fieldwork exercises, and project work.

  • Our staff are approachable, friendly, and supportive of our students.  Our students enjoy living and studying in Swansea.  There is an active student-led Geographical Society.

  • We place considerable emphasis on transferable skills to ensure that our students are well-placed to be employed in the modern work environment.

  • And finally, Swansea is a wonderful place to live and study.  The University is situated on an attractive, compact campus, in the corner of a park, with the sea across the road.  The vibrant city is on the doorstep, and the beaches and coast of Gower and the hills of the Brecon Beacons are a short journey away.
