World leading research

Geography at Swansea University is ranked joint 9th in the UK for research impact and 11th in the UK for research environment, according to the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) results.

Our research environment (how the Department supports research staff and students) and the impact of our research (its value to society) were both judged to be 100% world leading or internationally excellent.

Highlights of the wider impact of our research include (i) work jointly with NASA to improve weather forecasts and climate predictions;  (ii) collaborations with the US forest service and Sydney's water supply agency to better protect areas affected by wildfire from severe erosion(iii) work with the Sabah Government in Borneo into the effects of logging and climate change on erosion and rainforest regeneration, which  has led to ways of reducing these negative impacts; and (iv) research into age disputes regarding migrants, which led to improvements to existing age assessment procedures.
