The University has purchased a number of Evac-chairs. These are designed to assist in evacuating those who cannot do so in the statutory time of three minutes.
The Safety and Disability Offices are running regular training sessions for staff who wish to learn how to use this potentially life-saving equipment. Check the Staff Development Unit web-pages for course details, or contact the Staff Development Unit on ext.5762.

These tests are a statutory requirement.
The following is the campus weekly fire alarm testing schedule. The times are approximate within 1/2 hour bands, but may vary from week to week depending on the actual conditions at the time of testing e.g. minor faults that have to be dealt with and notifying the telephone exchange.
Fire Alarm Testing Schedule
The University is legally required to carry out fire evacuation drills on all its buildings on a regular basis. A rolling programme of drills for this academic year will be starting soon. Please note the following:
A fire alarm can be activated in several ways depending upon its design, but whether set off by heat, smoke, accident (dust etc) or human intervention (fire drills and malicious activation), the response of the building occupants must always be the same.
People are frequently seen entering buildings where the alarm has been activated and staff should actively discourage this if they observe it. When the Fire Brigade arrive they will ask for the alarm to be silenced so that they can communicate with each other by radio. The silencing of the alarm is not a sign that you can re-enter the building.
The University is required to have designated fire wardens to assist with building clearance but these people may not be present at the time of alarm activation. All staff have a duty 'to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and other persons' and therefore must assist in the evacuation of the building, without putting themselves at risk. Students and visitors must be appraised of the situation and encouraged to leave.
If you have any information about people in difficulties you must tell the Fire Brigade as soon as they arrive. This information is summarised on fire action notices wich are placed by every call point, these notices also display the designated assembly point.
The University's emergency telephone number is ext.333
This number is used for all emergencies on University property. During the day (09.00am-17.30pm) it is answered by the switchboard who will contact the emergency services, connect you to them, and monitor your call and assist if necessary. At all other times the call will be answered by the porters or night security in Fulton House who will contact the emergency service that you require.
When you use ext.333 be prepared to supply as much concise information about your location and the type of emergency e.g. Fire, building name, floor and room number, as you can.
When ext.333 is used whoever answers the phone will also carry out other duties e.g. phoning the main gate in order that staff there can direct the emergency vehicle to the correct location etc. Using a mobile phone to phone 999 means that the University is not alerted and these other calls are not made, therefore mobile use should be confined to those areas where an ordinary phone is not accessible e.g. the lower car parks. Should a mobile phone be used on University property because an ordinary phone is unavailable, the University must then be contacted by phoning +44 (0)1792 205678 as soon as possible.
