Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre
Nanotechnology is a cutting-edge field that transcends traditional discipline boundaries, both within engineering and across the life and physical sciences.
Recognition of the strategic importance of research in the nano domain by HEFCW and Swansea University led to the creation of the Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre (MNC) in January 2002.
The centre has been extremely successful in driving inter-disciplinary research that links traditional areas of engineering and explores new collaborative themes such as nanoscale process development and nanomedicine. This is reflected in the award of over £10 million of grant income since its creation and growth to an academic cohort of over 30 staff (5 of which hold prestigious research fellowships).
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, the MNC was submitted as a single entity into UoA 25 general engineering, 80% of our staff were classed as producing research of world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) quality, placing us joint 5th in the UK rankings.
The MNC encompasses a broad range of research areas and is home to a number of established centres. Details of these are given below:
RESEARCH CENTRES
Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC)
Centre for Complex Fluids Processing
Communications (formally known as The Institute of Advanced Telecommunications)
Research areas within the Centre include:
Bio-nanotechnology
Polymers at interfaces and in thin films
Nano-optics and scanning near-field optical microscopy
Wide Band-Gap Semi-Conductors
Photonics
Wireless Technologies
Networks
