Working with Industry

Members of staff work closely with a range of industries in both consultancy (often short term investigations of problems) and strategic research. The intimate knowledge of industry which this interaction develops is used to inform practical problems in our teaching.

Within Wales we have close interaction with large companies such as Corus and Ford, as well as many smaller concerns.  Across the UK there is or has been recent  work with companies such as Astra-Zeneca, Qinetiq, GKN and Rolls-Royce whilst further afield there is close working with companies such as SKF (Netherlands) and Phelps Dodge (USA) to name a few.

All our undergraduate BEng and MEng programmes now offer a variation with a year in industry.

This industrial collaboration provides many benefits in a number of key areas:

  • Projects – we pride ourselves on being able to offer a wide range of high-calibre individual and group projects (both at undergraduate and post-graduate level) which are industrially inspired, having real engineering objectives, constraints and timescales
  • Research – We have a long tradition of co-operation with industry on research, development and consultancy projects
  • Visits and placements - We place a high priority on organising industrial experience for them and we are committed to identifying and promoting these opportunities
  • Curriculum Development – enabling us to maintain the relevance of our course material to industrial needs
  • Employment – a degree in Mechanical Engineering provides excellent job opportunities and, again, our staff are on hand to promote these opportunities, many of which come to us directly as a result of our industrial contacts

Some examples of our industrial partners are given in the list, ranging from multi-nationals such as British Steel, Ford, Rolls-Royce and Valeo to small businesses such as Envases, Zeus Precision Castings and Cogent Passenger Seating.

At the heart of this success is the our highly respected and innovative Industrial Liaison Committee. The ILC provides valuable support and guidance on matters of curriculum development, industrial trends and funding/sponsorship opportunities.

We also have an excellent track record in setting up and running Government funded Teaching Company Schemes, which draw on university expertise to support key industrial development projects and for which graduate employment opportunities are always available.
