Undergraduate Degrees
In Mechanical Engineering we offer a three year BEng and four year Master’s programmes. Each of these may be taken with an additional year in Europe, North America or in industry. All the programmes are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Those leaving with a BEng will need to complete some further courses before they can attain Chartered Engineer status. Progression from BEng to MEng is conditional on results.| Degree Name | BEng | MEng |

Schemes of study
Mechanical engineers are found in every aspect of the engineering industry. This ranges from automotive, aerospace and power generation through to raw material recovery and recycling. They are involved with design, from miniature biomedical devices through to air transport for military and civilian use. New emerging industries such as renewable energy, recycling systems and sports equipment design are also dependent on mechanical engineers.
Our undergraduate courses are linked to our research excellence. The School is recognised world wide for its research in excellence in computational modelling with leading edge applications to underpin product and manufacturing process design, the development of next generation manufacturing technologies for innovative devices such as biomedical, lighting and signage applications and underpinning research on machine dynamics, condition monitoring and data fusion to support future energy and process industries. The overwhelming majority of this research work is directly related to practical problems in industry and our expertise in these fields strongly influences the content and presentation of the course material. Another notable aspect of Swansea’s BEng programme is the practice of using engineering design as a central integrating feature throughout every level. This philosophy has led to prestigious awards, for example first places for our Formula Student and Aerospace design teams.
Our flagship courses are the three-year BEng and four year MEng programmes in Mechanical Engineering. Levels One and Two are designed to develop a new skill set in Engineering Sciences; Design, Manufacturing; Computer Modelling; Business and Management; Communication and IT and Mathematics.
At Level Three our programmes become more project oriented . Your design skills and analytical techniques are developed further, and you undertake a group design project and an individual project. The individual projects are normally linked to either industry or research and we offer a wide choice of topics to fulfill your interests.
Level M of the MEng programme is intended to provide technical depth together with technical and nontechnical breadth beyond that achieved in the BEng degree. You will develop a skill set that will be the springboard to top positions in Engineering. Consequently, advanced management together with entrepreneurial knowledge is introduced at this level. There is also a more in-depth treatment of selected technical subjects. Project work features strongly in Level M where groups undertake a group project that spans the complete cycle of product identification, its design and manufacture, through to drafting a business plan.
Opportunities exist for transfer from BEng to MEng at the end of Level Two.
We also offer BEng and MEng programmes that include opportunities to study for one year at partner universities in Europe, North America or Canada. Alternatively, you can also undertake a year gaining industrial experience. These placements are taken on successful completion of Level Two.
Accreditation
Our MEng and BEng degree schemes are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). These schemes fulfil part of the requirement for chartered membership of the Institution and, upon graduation, there are clear paths leading to the prized chartered engineer (CEng) status.
Career Prospects
Mechanical Engineering has always been a large and consistent area of employment, nationally and internationally. Salaries are typically above average A significant number of Swansea’s graduates also go on to study for higher degrees here in the School, for which there are a number of scholarships available, or elsewhere in the UK.
International Students
We welcome applications from International students for entry at either Levels One or Two. Direct entry into Level Two is possible provided you have already covered the topics from Level One – for example through a relevant diploma. We will be happy to advise you on the suitability of your qualifications.
