Rachael Russell, Graduate Scheme, MOD

Rachael Russell

“Swansea University has developed my technical knowledge and skills, preparing me for a job in industry. From this I have been able to secure my dream job, and I know many of my course friends have had the same outcome therefore showing that by studying at Swansea you are given the opportunities needed to succeed.

Swansea has helped with my confidence and independence, both in academic study and generally as a person.  Through work placements and interaction with lecturers, I now feel confident in my ability as an engineer, which enables me to discuss and challenge ideas."

Her story is being followed by our Alumni team here.

"Studying at the College of Engineering is enjoyable and it has made me realise how great enigineering is as a subject.

I have enjoyed studying engineering so much here that it has driven me to study it to a higher level in the future.

It has certainly further ignited my already great passion for engineering!"

“I decided to study at the College of Engineering as it has a good reputation earned over the years through various research and collaborative projects with industry.

My favourite memories of the course are the friendliness of the tutors, exciting course content and the opportunity to compete in the Formula student – designing and building single seater racing cars.

I am currently studying for an engineering doctorate in the materials department in conjunction with TATA steel Europe. I am currently doing research work looking at the computational fluid dynamics of the blast furnace gas cleaning plant – specifically on dust separation in a gasification cyclone.

The University has a great reputation for teaching and research in engineering. The possibilities are endless as long as you apply yourself and take every opportunity the College of Engineering gives.”

“The main reason I decided to study Engineering at Swansea University was that I had always been fascinated by engineering and the various disciplines that you end up learning, from design to aerodynamics right through to some very intricate mathematics. Mechanical Engineering at Swansea University gave me the opportunity to experience several different classes and give me a wide breadth of knowledge.

The second reason was due to its location. I was competing in surfing competitions around the country as well as representing Wales in the European surfing championships. You can surf, mountain bike, rock climb down the Gower – it’s just a great place to balance your studies with extracurricular activities.”

“I truly believe that an Engineering course at Swansea University gave me an excellent head start in life to build an exciting and rewarding career.”

"The best part of my mechanical engineering degree was the year in industry, which was brilliant and opened my eyes to what I could be doing in the world of work and I actually was employed by the company after I graduated.

Also the lecturers here are absolutely brilliant, they're really supportive, they help you out when you need it and give you a lot of encouragement."
