Schemes of Study

The foundation year is common to all disciplines and while some students choose a course code which will lead them directly onto their choice of engineering discipline, many others choose to select their chosen degree scheme during the year by opting for Deferred Choice. One of the real benefits of the Engineering Foundation Year, is that it is very flexible in allowing students to progress to such a wide choice of subject areas including, Aerospace, Civil, Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical, Medical, Materials, Electrical and Product Design Engineering.

The foundation year, Level 0, consists of eleven modules spread over two teaching blocks.

Modules will include subjects in the following areas:

  • Mathematics
  • Key skills for engineers
  • Fundamentals of materials
  • Thermofluid mechanics
  • Structural petroleum and polymeric materials
  • Optics and sound
  • Electricity and magnetism
  • Mechanics

Accreditation

Once students progress to Level One of a degree programme, they will find that most of the School’s Engineering degrees are accredited by the professional institutions. This is very important for long term career progression and is an important consideration when making a degree choice. The accreditation of our schemes is based on regular, rigorous reviews of our course content and delivery by the professional bodies. This means, that after an accredited degree from the School of Engineering and structured industrial training, our graduates are eligible for the prized “Chartered Engineer” status.

International Students

The Engineering foundation year should be considered by all international students wishing to study a degree in Engineering but who do not have the qualifications to enable Level One entry. IELTS 6.0 or equivalent is required.
