An EngD is a four year full-time doctoral level programme. The four-year scheme consists of taught modules and an industry led research project.
The research project is undertaken as a partnership between the collaborating company and Swansea University. The project is based on a real engineering problem and will be defined by the industrial partner. It will be challenging and innovative in its content.
As a Research Engineer on the EngD programme, you will spend at least 50% of your time with the collaborating company on the research project. You will usually begin the research project within six months of the start of the EngD programme.
At the end of the EngD programme, a thesis of no more than 100,000 words is submitted, which demonstrates original research that contributes significantly to the subject area, and assessment in the form of an oral examination (viva).
