Working with Industry
The discipline has a good track-record of working with industry both at research level and in linking industry-related work to our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The School also has an industrial advisory board that ensures that our taught courses maintain relevance. Our research groups work with many major UK, Japanese, European and American multinational companies and numerous small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to pioneer research (have a look at our Research pages).
It is inevitable that all this activity filters down and influences the project work that is undertaken by all our undergraduate and postgraduate students. All our undergraduates, in their third year of study, undertake a significant individual project on topics that are generated via our research centres and many are therefore directly related to industry.
In the final year of our MEng schemes students work on an industrial group project. Projects are generated in conjunction with one of our industrial contacts. Students work as a team on the project and report back to both their industrial and academic supervisors.
Students who opt for one of our schemes with a ‘year in industry’ spend the third year on placement. Help is available to find a suitable placement, which may be with a local SME or a large international company.
