Working with Industry

Strong interaction and cooperation is forged between Civil Engineering and the construction industry and relevant member institutions of the JBM (Joint Board of Moderators), particularly ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) and IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineers).

A number of local practising engineers is involved with the education of students, and their teaching lends engineering design practice to the modules they teach.

Close links have been established with local companies, which offer valuable support in project work at all levels, and particularly in Level 4 Group Design Project. This represents a ‘real life’ project, which is jointly supervised by an industrial professional and academic member of staff.

In addition, a number of local companies have been pro-active by giving valuable support in providing general engineering advice, helping with site visits, student placements, employment, etc.

Civil Engineering has strong links with ICE and IStructE, as member institutions of the JBM that are closely related to our Civil Engineering Programmes. A majority of our students join one of the institutions during their studies. Frequent evening meetings of the ICE, IStructE, Geotechnical Society and Concrete Society are organised in Swansea University, and students are advised to actively participate in these meetings. The Institutions are also active in attending Graduate Award days at the end of each academic year. Civil Engineering in Swansea is a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers Graduates and Students Committee. The University’s Engineering Society participates in meetings and visits/events organized by the Committee.

Civil engineering programmes are designed and continuously modified with a view of the future needs of the construction industry. The mechanism that offers the construction industry with an opportunity for active input into development of the programmes is provided by the Industrial Liaison Panel. The Panel, comprising academic staff and principals from local consultancies and contractors, meets annually, when course changes are reported and opinions sought on the relevance of course subject matter to the requirements of practising engineers. The Panel recommendations are then reported to the School Review meetings, where possible changes to the modules are approved.
