Schemes of Study
The courses are designed to meet the needs of the civil engineering industry and are continuously reviewed by an industrial liaison panel made up of practising engineers from companies such as Arup, Atkins, Binnie Ferguson McIlveen, Dean & Dyball, Halcrow, Interserve, Mott MacDonald and Veryards.
MEng Programme
At the core of our range of courses is the four-year MEng in Civil Engineering. At Level One, you are presented with the fundamentals of engineering science and design, emphasising the importance and special characteristics of engineering knowledge.
Level Two modules are intended to expand upon the fundamentals, introducing you to new themes and typical applications in design and construction. Topics related to Civil Engineering, such as geology and business principles, will also be introduced.
Practical design and management aspects of Civil Engineering are emphasised in Levels Three and Four and your technical knowledge will be extended and enhanced. At Level Three, the Civil Engineering practice module is organised in collaboration with local engineers.
The group design project is an important component of Level Four and this involves a substantial element of supervision by local practising engineers. For the MEng course your final degree mark is gained in Levels Two, Three and Four with the ratio 1:2:2.
BEng Programme
When you study the three-year BEng course, Levels One and Two are shared with the four-year MEng course. At Level Three, you will examine civil engineering concepts in depth and you will improve your research skills by undertaking an individual project.
BEng with Year in Industry Programme
For the four-year BEng in Civil Engineering with a year in industry, Levels One and Two will be shared with the standard three-year BEng course. The third year is spent out on an industrial placement with either local or national companies.
After your year in industry, you will return to study at the University and enter into Level Three of the BEng course.
Scheme Mobility
The structure of the schemes of study is such that transfer between the BEng and MEng courses may be permitted, subject to appropriate standards of academic performance being reached. Encouragement and, whenever possible, assistance is given to any student who expresses the desire to break his or her period of study in order to work for 12 months in industry.
Accreditation
The BEng degree schemes are accredited as:
- fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).
- partially satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng). A programme of accredited Further Learning will be required to complete the educational base for CEng.
The MEng degree schemes are accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for a Chartered Engineer (CEng).
See www.jbm.org.uk for further information and details of Further Learning programmes for CEng.
Career Prospects
Civil Engineering graduates are in continually high demand with graduate employers. Our degrees provide an excellent basis for a professional career in civil, structural, municipal and allied engineering fields and Swansea graduates find employment in these areas locally, nationally and internationally.
A number of Civil Engineering graduates choose to seek employment in the finance sector, including banking, accountancy and consultancy, where their numeracy and problem-solving skills are highly valued.
International Students
International students are very welcome to study Civil Engineering at Swansea and our past students have an excellent record of success. If you have qualifications equivalent to Level One of our degree schemes (e.g. a relevant diploma) you will be able to join at Level Two. You may then progress to either BEng or MEng depending on attainment.
