For several decades, the College has produced world-leading research in the areas of computational modelling and high performance materials. The collaborative links to aerospace companies including BAE Systems, Airbus and Rolls Royce are strong and well established. The College has a track record of attracting numerous and large research grants. In the latest RAE (results published in December 2008) the research undertaken in the college was rated 4* which corresponds to the highest mark attainable.
This research is combined with outstanding teaching and facilities in Aerospace Engineering giving Swansea University a unique and leading position in this field. Staff within the College of Engineering are involved in many exciting state-of-the-art projects, many of which are in collaboration with industry. Thus, there is a wide range of exciting postgraduate research project topics that can be chosen.
The UK aerospace industry is the second largest in the world, directly employing 112,000 people. Productivity is 50% higher than the UK average, and the industry invested just over £2 billion in R&D, second only to the pharmaceutical sector.
The postgraduate programmes are based on the world class research in computational methods in the C2EC Research Centre, in the Materials Research Centre and more recently the Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre. They provide students with the knowledge and skills required to embark on an exciting career in the aerospace industry or to pursue a career in academia.

For MSc courses, the students will take a core set of modules before moving on to the research project of their study that can be chosen from any relevant research area within the College. For the MRes programme, students take fewer modules before moving on to a more extensive research project. The MPhil and the PhD are pure research programmes which typically consists of a one year or a three year research project, respectively, done usually in collaboration with industry. EngD degrees provide specialist programmes that integrate training and research, and are offered in close collaboration with the aerospace industries.
