Welcome to sport and exercise science at Swansea. Sports Science programmes are very popular and there are currently in the region of 230 full-time students with similar numbers of female and male students. Sport and exercise science requires the application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving human function or performance. The study of sports science is organised within the disciplines of Physiology, Biomechanics, Psychology / Motor Control but also includes other topics such as Sports Technology, Nutrition and Diet, Kinanthropometry and Performance Analysis.

Research active staff, state-of-the-art laboratories and high quality sporting facilities make Swansea a leading location in the UK for research and teaching in Sport and Exercise Science. Teaching and research is based in the School of Engineering, which achieved a combined score that ranked number 8 in the UK and number 1 in Wales during the recent RAE.
Research focused on the influence of physical activity and exercise on health and well-being is currently funded by Welsh Office of Research and Development, Diabetes UK, and Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust.
Our collaborators in research that focuses on sporting performance include The Sugar Bureau, Welsh Rugby Union, Celtic Crusaders, Swansea City FC, Scarlets, Ospreys, Wigan Athletic FC, British Swimming, British Cycling and UK Sport. These industrial links provide our students with the opportunity to develop knowledge and transferable skills that enhance employment opportunities.
