Two large estuaries flow into Carmarthen Bay: The Three Rivers Estuary (rivers Towy, Taf and Gwendraeth) and the Loughor Estuary (The Burry Inlet).
The extensive sandbars and mudflats of the Loughor Estuary and their associated saltmarsh areas are collectively designated as a Ramsar Site (a wetland of international importance) for their wintering and migrating flocks of waders and wildfowl.
Fortunately, the heavy oil slicks did not greatly affect these estuaries and adjacent Gower coasts, apart from localised light oiling on a small number of shores and inlets.
