The Swansea English Language Test

SWELT is the official English language test for international students wishing to study at Swansea University. The test is designed, administered, and marked by English Language Training Services staff and is accepted by Swansea University as an alternative to IELTS as part of your application for a CAS.

Swansea University is a Licenced Sponsor under Tier 4 of the Points Based Immigration System and therefore accepts SWELT as an alternative to IELTS for entry to degree and postgraduate programmes.

 

AM I SUITABLE FOR THE SWELT TEST?

SWELT is ideal if you:-

  • already know that you want to study at Swansea University and are looking for an alternative to IELTS as fulfilment of your English language entry requirement.
  • are interested in studying for a bachelor or postgraduate degree in the UK, are interested in studying at Swansea, one of the UK’s leading universities and would like an alternative to IELTS*.

HOW DO I BOOK A SWELT TEST?

To book a SWELT exam at Swansea University, please complete the following steps

STEP 1: Register for a test HERE*

STEP 2: Pay the test fee of £100 via the PayPal link below

 

If you do not have a PayPal account, please select “guest checkout” for card payment

 

You must confirm your place and make payment in full before sitting the test. You may be refused entry to the test if you have not completed both steps 1 and 2.

*Please note we cannot accept registrations for a SWELT exam made later than two full working days before the exam date. For example, if your test is on a Monday, please ensure you have completed your online registration, received confirmation of a place, and paid in full no later than 5pm on the previous Wednesday. If you do not receive an email within one week of registering, please contact elts@swansea.ac.uk.

 

SECURITY

As SWELT is used as part of your visa application process, our testing arrangements are very secure.

FORMAT OF THE SWELT TEST
 
The SWELT consists of the following papers:

  • READING : 1 hour
  • WRITING : 1 hour
  • GRAMMAR AND ACADEMIC VOCABULARY : 40 Minutes
  • LISTENING: 45 minutes
  • SPEAKING: 15 mins (Tier 4 Visa test takers only)

All components are normally taken at a single session, on the same day. Please allow a full working day to sit the test.

Each component is scored in a banding system, equivalent to the IELTS banding, and an overall band is obtained by averaging performance across the four components.
