All About Summer Introduction to Academic Skills

Our Introduction to Academic Skills programme is a full-time, 10 week summer programme perfect for you if you do not meet the criteria for our main summer pre-sessional courses, but:

  • need to develop your academic skills and academic English language ability from a basic level.

This course is an introduction to academic skills in English only and does not enable you to enter directly into the university. This programme is ideal if you need to begin your academic English learning at Swansea University.

Course Information

Introduction to Academic Skills (IAS) will help you to improve the skills you need to begin your progression to your future undergraduate or postgraduate course. By completing IAS successfully, you will have a better understanding of the following important academic language and study skills:

  • Language Skills for Academic Studies
  • Academic Reading
  • Listening and Note-taking Skills for Academic Lectures
  • Academic Writing
  • Introduction to Speaking Skills for Academic Contexts
  • Introduction to Using Academic Sources and Referencing Skills
  • Critical Thinking

Each week includes 21 hours of organised tuition. Download a sample IAS timetable to find out more about a typical week. The maximum class size is 18.

During the course, you will build a portfolio of coursework which will be used as part of your final assessment. Each IAS student has a personal tutor who will meet you regularly to help you to develop individual targets and achieve your academic goals.

IAS gives you everything you need to begin your language and academic studies successfully. Please note it does not enable you to enter directly into the university.

You will be assessed using a combination of

  • a portfolio of the work you do during your course (70%)
  • an end of course exam (30%).

The portfolio provides detailed evidence of your language level and skills, your academic skills, and whether you are ready to begin academic study at a UK university.
