Swansea University

Welcome to the CELTA Programme

About the course

Training on a CELTA course with Swansea University will allow you to start a career to teach English Language either abroad or in the UK. You do not need previous experience or knowledge of languages other than English.  A certificate course such as this is recognised world-wide as a basic training qualification for employment in EFL teaching. Normally this is in the private sector.

Previous Trainees write:

Several hundred trainees have taken Swansea University's CELTA course since they started. Some of them have been kind enough to write about their experiences, and success after taking the course. All have given permission for their opinions to be published here.

The Course

The course is an intensive four-weeks, running from 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. every day.

The mornings are taken up by training – lectures, seminars and workshops. All of this is very practical and directed towards giving you the information and skills you need to operate effectively in the classroom.

The afternoons are dedicated to providing you with supervised teaching practice, You are always observed by experienced teachers, and teaching sessions are followed by oral and written feedback sessions. These are always framed to give the maximum help, advice and encouragement to you in developing an efficient and effective classroom style.

All sessions, both morning and afternoon, take place in small groups. In the mornings the maximum course size is 18 trainees: in the afternoon teaching sessions this becomes a maximum group of six. We are fortunate to be able to recruit volunteer non-native speaker students at different levels of ability to form a real environment in which you can gain teaching experience. You are guaranteed six hours supervised and observed teaching at at least two levels of student ability. Co-trainees also observe all teaching sessions.

Attainment

By the end of the course a successful trainee will have demonstrated:

  • Awareness of adult language learners’ needs, of critical aspects of language, and of the basic principles of language learning.
  • Practical, professionally relevant knowledge of the English language, and of materials to teach English language.
  • Ability to plan and prepare individual lessons, and a short series of lessons.
  • Ability to teach effectively in the classroom.
  • The willingness and ability to reflect productively on teaching experiences

Assessment

Assessment is primarily achieved by the observation and careful recording of trainee performance whilst on the course. Particular attention is paid to practical teaching ability. All trainees are observed by at least two experienced trainers whilst on the course.

Practical and useful assignments are also set during the course,  which are part of the formal assessment,  together with a brief test in English grammar toward the end of the course.

Trainee attainment is graded, with passing grades at A / B and C levels.

Entry Qualifications

You will normally be:

  • A graduate, or with a graduate standard of education / experience.
  • A native-speaker of English, or a non-nativer speaker with a near-native level of English (IELTS 6.5 minimum)

Applicants who meet these standards are normally asked to attend interview in Swansea. Where this is impossible, we will speak to you by telephone or via web cam or video conferencing before acceptance.

ReAct Funding

Applicants who are resident in Wales, and who have experienced, or will experience redundancy, may apply for ReAct funding via the Welsh Assembly Government.
Applications for ReAct funding must be made separately via Careers Wales in the first instance. Information about ReAct funding can be obtained from the Welsh Assembly Government pages here.  Swansea University and ELTS are not involved in the decision to award funding support, and successful applications for funding do not necessarily guarantee acceptance onto a university training course. All trainees funded via ReAct must also fulfil all parts of the University's admissions and progression requirements before joining a course or obtaining an award.
