Development Studies (or the study of international development) is concerned with the study of global patterns of poverty, exclusion and insecurity and their causes and of options to address them both nationally and internationally. Most people who live in extreme poverty live in conflict-affected states, so our MA International Security and Development, for instance, offers students the opportunity to study the relationship between poverty and insecurity and the role that security and social order can play in helping alleviate poverty.
Our MA Development and Human Rights allows students to study the connection between poverty and the denial of human rights, and of options to break the destructive cycle. And our MA International Communication and Development allows students to study the role of the global ‘digital divide’ in exacerbating poverty and of options to use digital communication technologies to tackle poverty and to promote social inclusion.
