Research, the relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding, has driven Swansea University’s growth for nearly a century.
Swansea’s research environment benefits from some world-class facilities and dedicated support staff, and has seen substantial investment in recent years. As a compact campus, Swansea also benefits from being able to bring together researchers from a broad range of subject areas, which has in turn enabled the University to establish a dynamic multidisciplinary approach that other, larger universities find hard to emulate.
The University has also been successful in attracting world-class staff and new campus-based research centres and
institutes are attracting more funding and expanding our network of academic and commercial partners.
The RAE2008 - an independent review of research quality
The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) showed that

- The University was ranked 36th in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) power table, where 27 out of Swansea University's 31 research areas are shown to be undertaking world-leading work.
- Almost 50 per cent of staff were rated as world-leading or internationally excellent in terms of originality, significance and rigour (4* and 3*).
