We are engaging with policy makers, the general public, and school and university students to ensure a wide and balanced appreciation of the issues surrounding the effect of climate change on the Greenland Ice Sheet.  Some of our activities are included below.

Schools and undergraduates

  • web-based field diaries
  • School visits, science encouragement and master classes

General public and Arctic communities

 Policy-makers

  • Improving estimates of sea level rise from the Greenland Ice Sheet has linked with Roger Williams, Liberal Democrat MP for Brecon and Radnorshire, through the Royal Society MP-Scientist pairing scheme
  • Development of contacts with Welsh Assembly
  • Invite policy makers to end of project briefing

 Other scientists

  • Participation in meetings and workshops including:
    • the 2005 AGU Fall Meeting;
    • further thematic sessions at EGU and AGU.

Summer Science Exhibition

Find out smart answers to BIG Questions at the Royal Society Summer Science Exhibition 2008

We exhibited an interactive and visually stunning display at the Royal Society from Monday 30th June to Thursday 3rd July. Our exhibit explored the stability of the Greenland Ice Sheet and was aimed at high school age children upwards. The displays were highly interactive with

  • A laser to scan our visitors;
  • a radar to show how we measure the thickness of an ice sheet;
  • 3-D images of melting glaciers; and
  • an amazing iceberg calving video.

The exhibit was staffed by a tribe of keen undergrads, PhD students and professors. We even had a floor which was a photo of a glacier surface - complete with giant lakes and huge crevasses.
