JJ3A A group of men ready to unload supplies from the steamer. This scene at the harbour shows eight men standing up to their ankles in water with their trousers rolled up, in shorts or underwear, apparently ready for boat-day duty. Four men are standing on a low cement mole behind them, and three of them seem to be ready for rough work. The man at the extreme left is wearing a suit and carrying a walking stick: he is possibly the communes representative, waiting to greet new arrivals and take them up to the village. (The political exiles bought their walking sticks from a common-law exile, an animal thief.) In the background, to the right, two dinghies, with crew holding oars, are waiting next to the jetty.
