Exiles on hunger strike, Anafi, December 1935. This photograph, given to Bert Birtles by one of the exiles in the commune he visited in February 1936, shows nine exiles on hunger-strike for amnesty in December 1935. Some are sitting, some lying in bed. The person fourth from the left might possibly be a woman, Athanasia Nikola´dhi. In the centre of the picture is a poster with one slogan in capital letters: "Long live the hunger strike", and another in cursive Greek: "Amnesty or Death". To the right of the poster is a map of Asia Minor, to the left, a picture of a man with his arms leaning on a book or manuscript (Birtles 1938: 131, reproduced, by permission).
